Saving a Life, Inspiring a Future!
Ramzia was experiencing severe labor pains, paired with a throbbing headache, when she walked into the health facility in Herat province, Afghanistan.

“I heard a woman … crying for help,” midwife Najiba Sidiqi said. Midwife Sidiqi examined her and quickly diagnosed the woman, who was in her 39th week of pregnancy, with severe pre-eclampsia, a life-threatening condition for both Ramzia and her unborn child.

Midwife Sidiqi acted quickly. “I started her treatment with a dose of magnesium sulfate and anti-hypertensive medicine,” she said, referencing a recent 5-day training she had received on how to manage just such a complication during childbirth.

Ramzia delivered a healthy baby boy the next day. Together, they were carefully monitored and eventually discharged, safe and sound.

But midwife Sidiqi didn’t just save two lives with her intervention—she inspired Ramzia to become a midwife herself! Today, the Afghan mother is in midwifery school, studying hard. “I am getting more committed to my studies now,” Ramzia said. “I want to save the lives of mothers, like Najiba did.”

As Jhpiego Alumni, you don’t just save lives. You inspire and transform futures, too. We are so grateful for your passion and dedication.
