A Pakistani Doctor’s Chance to Make a Difference
After giving birth, few of Dr. Afrah Hameed’s female patients returned for follow-up care. Often, their husbands didn’t see a reason to bring them. That left the doctor challenged: she knew the benefits of healthy birth spacing for mother and baby, but how could she share that knowledge with the men and women in her traditional community?

Her answer came during a training on long-acting reversible contraceptives held by the United States Agency for International Development’s flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP). At the training, Dr. Hameed learned that providing an intrauterine contraceptive device or implant soon after birth offers women a safe, reliable method to prevent an unintended pregnancy. She also improved her ability to counsel women and couples on the benefit of birth spacing and give them the opportunity to voluntarily adopt postpartum family planning.

With newfound confidence and updated skills, Dr. Hameed became a passionate advocate for informed choice. She shares her knowledge with other health care providers, too. At her hospital in Punjab, as more couples voluntarily choose to plan their families, Dr. Hameed sees fewer unintended pregnancies. That's a healthier future for women and families.
