We are thrilled to share news of publication of a study in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on our HIV prevention and treatment work in Mozambique. The study shows a low and decreasing trend in the rate of false-positive HIV diagnoses in Chókwè District from 2014 to 2017, using a recommended national rapid HIV testing algorithm.  The few false diagnoses observed underscore the importance of routine retesting and confirmation of an HIV diagnosis for all patients before initiation of antiretroviral treatment. The trends in the estimated prevalence of false-positive HIV diagnosis highlight the importance of improved rapid HIV testing practices and quality management systems that address training, supervision, proficiency testing, and external quality assessment of providers who conduct rapid HIV testing.

A Jhpiego-led study published December 17 in PLOS ONE demonstrates that a simple, inexpensive intervention improves the performance of nurses and midwives, and makes birth significantly safer for women and newborns. Onsite training featuring shortened, simulation-based lessons and peer mentoring led to a 62% decrease in newborn death across 125 public facilities in Uganda, as well as a 17% decrease in postpartum hemorrhage, which is the leading cause of maternal death globally.
