The World Journal of Surgery has published an article on a health systems approach to saving lives through safe surgery. The government of Ethiopia’s initiative relies on establishing strong leadership, using existing learning platforms, acknowledging the importance of collaborative local partners, defining evidence-based surgical, obstetric, and anesthetic care packages; and designing a monitoring and evaluation strategy that can be used to implement successful scale-up at the national level.
