A doctor in Madagascar properly manages the twin threats of postpartum hemorrhage and pre-eclampsia in a pregnant woman. Both conditions are leading causes of maternal deaths worldwide and key focuses of emergency obstetric training provided by USAID's Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program.
Zambian Midwives Organize Professional Association
With support from Jhpiego, the 200-member Midwives Association of Zambia seeks a greater role in decision-making to improve maternal health. As the capacity of nurses and midwives grows in Africa, such organizations provide opportunities to develop leadership skills.
Health Providers at Maputo Hospital Reach Out to Victims of Sexual Assault
Nurses lead an effort to ensure sexual assault victims receive HIV prevention services and treatment as a way to extend appropriate services to women and others. A review of emergency admissions, supported by Jhpiego, resulted in the initiative and a public awareness campaign in areas of Maputo city.
